Review of "PUSH START" Info Session

This year's Give and Gain information session "PUSH START" was a remarkable success. Not only did we have four important guest speakers from Monseacs, Salvation Army, Red Cross Australia, and Amnesty International, we also had many enthusiastic participants in attendance.

These organisations offer a variety of volunteer opportunities (eg. Salvation Army Christmas Cheer Program; Education, Training and Youth Program, Asylum Seeker Assistance Scheme, and fundraising activities by Red Cross Australia, etc.). Amnesty International takes a unique approach to defending human rights through letter writing and lobbying.

Our feedback was extremely positive- 84% attendants found the seminar useful.  Presenters explained benefits and the value of voluntary activities. Volunteering does not just help those in need; it develops life long learning skills enhances employability.

However, don't worry if you missed this seminar. Handouts regarding the volunteering opportunities that these organisations provide are still available from Caulfield Monash International Office. For any questions, please contact 2GP at

Hear what current volunteers have to say...

Madeleine Eldridge - SA administration worker...

"I've been doing data entry at Salvation Army. I'm on the computer for a couple of hours at a time and my task is to enter the addresses and phone numbers of donors to the Salvation Army."

"The skills I've gained are mainly computer skills. Since starting the job I've learnt how to use new tools in Excel. I've also learnt teamwork and networking skills. The people I work with are really friendly. "

"It's definitely work experience that gives me an advantage over others in graduate employment."

Brendon Meyer - voluntary administration asistant...

"Since May 2005, I have been a voluntary administration assistant for the Smith Family working eight hours per week."

"Working at the Smith Family provided a new experience working in an office environment. My role involves data collection, data entry and compiling of reports.  I learnt new skills such as using new programmes structuring reports. "

"The only drawback is that I mainly work alone in front of a computer and tasks can sometimes be a bit repetitive.  I have still developed time management skills among other organisational skills for example. I now have a better understanding of report writing. I have also learnt skills that my degree does not offer (eg. the use of technology and judgement skills for stakeholder communication). "

Resume Writing Tips

  • Before you begin remember that a resume introduces you to an employer.
  •  Include name/contact details, work/professional experience, formal  education, awards and achievements, extra-curricular activities, hobbies/interests and then two references (with their contact details).
  • Also include where you worked, how many months and hours per week .
  • With work don't just explain what you did, but also how you did it, the end results and what you've achieved.
  • Explain other areas in detail (eg. if you play music then mention which instrument, mention your majors/minors and title of your dissertation, etc.)
  • Keep it short and simple (four pages).
  • Tailor your resume to the position (explain particular past roles that gave you the skills needed for the vacancy)
